Both cause coughing and breathing difficulty, but they arise from different mechanisms—persistent airway inflammation in dogs versus allergic airway spasm in cats. Neither can be cured, but proper medication, trigger avoidance, and environmental management give most pets good symptom control and a comfortable life.

Canine chronic bronchitis is an inflammatory airway disease that mainly affects middle-aged to older dogs. Small breeds are particularly susceptible, including West Highland White Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, and Chihuahuas.
The disease develops gradually. Chronic inflammation damages the airway lining, causing mucosal swelling and goblet cell proliferation. These cells produce excess mucus that accumulates in the airways, obstructing airflow and triggering the cough reflex. Over time, airway smooth muscle thickens, elastic tissue is replaced by fibrous tissue, and the airways narrow permanently. Long-standing bronchitis can also lead to bronchiectasis—permanent enlargement and deformation of the airways.
The exact cause is often unclear and likely involves multiple factors. Long-term exposure to air pollutants, secondhand smoke, dust, and chemical irritants are recognized risk factors. Recurrent respiratory infections can damage airway tissue and promote chronic inflammation. Some dogs may carry genetic susceptibility that makes their airways more reactive. While chronic bronchitis itself is not infectious, bacterial or viral infections can trigger acute flare-ups.
The hallmark symptom is a persistent dry cough, often described as a harsh "goose honk" or extended coughing episodes. Coughing tends to be worse in the morning, after exercise, after drinking water, or when the dog becomes excited. As the disease progresses, some dogs retch or produce small amounts of white foamy mucus at the end of coughing fits. In advanced cases, even mild activity causes noticeable wheezing and fatigue.
Feline asthma affects an estimated 1–5% of cats, with Siamese and other oriental breeds at potentially higher risk. It can develop at any age but is most common in adult cats between two and eight years old.
When a cat inhales an allergen, mast cells in the airways release histamine and other inflammatory mediators. This causes three simultaneous changes: airway smooth muscle contraction, mucosal edema, and increased mucus secretion—collectively narrowing the airway and making breathing difficult. Unlike canine chronic bronchitis, this constriction is usually reversible in early stages, responding quickly to bronchodilators.

Severity varies widely. Some cats cough only occasionally, while others experience life-threatening acute attacks with severe respiratory distress that requires emergency treatment.

Acute asthma attacks are emergencies. During an attack, a cat may show extreme breathing difficulty, blue-purple gums (cyanosis), and may crouch with elbows spread outward trying to expand the chest. The key differentiator: canine chronic bronchitis produces a persistent dry cough that worsens gradually over months, while feline asthma tends toward episodic symptoms—with periods of relative calm punctuated by flare-ups or acute attacks. Both conditions require veterinary diagnosis. Heart disease, lung infections, parasitic diseases, tracheal collapse, lung tumors, and aspiration pneumonia can all mimic these symptoms. For cats specifically, heartworm infection and lung parasites must be considered. A thorough workup—which may include chest X-rays, bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage, cardiac ultrasound, fecal examination, and blood tests—is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes.
On X-rays, dogs with chronic bronchitis may show thickened bronchial walls ("tram lines" or "doughnut signs") and diffuse interstitial infiltrates. Asthmatic cats may show hyperinflated lungs with abnormally lucent lung fields and caudal displacement of the diaphragm, and sometimes lung lobe collapse from mucus plugging. Normal X-rays do not completely rule out either disease.

Indoor air quality is the biggest controllable factor. Cigarette smoke is among the most harmful indoor pollutants and can both trigger disease onset and worsen existing symptoms. Other airborne irritants include fireplace smoke, candles, incense, cooking fumes, air fresheners, perfumes, cleaning products, and pesticides.
Litter choice matters for asthmatic cats. Traditional clay and scented litters generate fine dust that cats inhale at close range. Switch to low-dust or dust-free alternatives—paper litter, pine litter, or certain clumping formulas—and place litter boxes in well-ventilated areas.
Seasonal and weather factors can affect both conditions. Pollen seasons may worsen symptoms in sensitized cats. Extreme temperatures, high humidity, and poor air quality days can trigger flare-ups. Mold spores are another potential allergen, especially in damp environments.
Body weight affects respiratory disease directly. Excess weight increases the burden on already-compromised airways. Maintaining a healthy weight is a practical component of disease management.
Stress and excitement can trigger airway symptoms by changing breathing patterns and potentially inducing spasm. A calm, predictable home environment helps.

Treatment centers on corticosteroids to suppress airway inflammation (inhaled forms preferred for cats, using specially designed feline inhalation masks), bronchodilators like albuterol for acute relief and longer-acting options like salmeterol for maintenance, and rigorous trigger avoidance. Severe attacks require emergency oxygen support, injectable bronchodilators, and corticosteroids.
With appropriate long-term management, most dogs with chronic bronchitis and cats with asthma maintain good quality of life. The conditions cannot be cured, but they can be controlled well enough for pets to live comfortably and share many good years with their families.
