Conditions that can be mistaken for pulmonary fibrosis include congestive heart failure, chronic bronchitis, lungworm infection, lung cancer, and other interstitial lung diseases. Accurate diagnosis matters because treatment differs substantially between these conditions.

Treatment, Support, and Prognosis

There is currently no cure for pulmonary fibrosis. The treatment goal is to slow progression, manage symptoms, and preserve quality of life for as long as possible.

Monitoring. Regular follow-up exams—including repeat imaging and oxygenation checks—allow your veterinarian to track progression and adjust treatment. Report any worsening cough, breathing changes, or activity decline promptly.

For pneumonia, treatment is fundamentally different: bacterial pneumonia requires targeted antibiotics (guided by culture and sensitivity testing) for several weeks, along with supportive care including oxygen, nebulization, chest percussion, and fluid management. Most dogs with uncomplicated bacterial pneumonia recover fully with appropriate treatment, though seniors may need longer recovery time and are more prone to complications.

06How Long Can a Dog Live With Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Survival time varies widely and depends on the stage at diagnosis, the rate of progression, and how well the dog responds to supportive care. Some dogs live comfortably for 12 to 18 months or longer after diagnosis; others progress more rapidly.

The progression is generally slow but unpredictable. Regular veterinary assessment helps identify when quality of life is declining.
