Sarcopenia is the gradual, age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. Dogs may lose 1–2% of their muscle mass per year starting around age seven. The signs are subtle—prominent bones, difficulty rising, hind-leg trembling—and often mistaken for normal slowing down. Adequate protein, safe exercise, and veterinary guidance are the main tools for slowing progression. Sarcopenia differs from cachexia (disease-driven wasting) and from simple weight loss, so an accurate assessment matters.

The distinction matters because cachexia signals a medical problem that needs treatment, while sarcopenia calls for nutritional and activity-based support. Your veterinarian can differentiate between them using body condition scoring, muscle condition scoring, bloodwork, and clinical history.
Muscle loss in senior dogs results from several overlapping factors, and in most cases, more than one is at work.
Hormonal changes. As dogs age, levels of growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and testosterone decline. Meanwhile, cortisol—a catabolic hormone that promotes protein breakdown—may become relatively elevated. The balance between building muscle and breaking it down tips toward breakdown.
Neuromuscular degeneration. Motor neurons that signal muscle fibers to contract decrease with age, and the efficiency of nerve-to-muscle connections drops. Lost motor units mean lost contractile capacity, and the body's compensatory rewiring is imperfect.
Reduced activity. This is the single most modifiable factor. Senior dogs naturally move less—because of arthritis, declining senses, or lower energy. Muscles follow a "use it or lose it" principle, and inactivity accelerates atrophy. A vicious cycle develops: less muscle leads to less movement, which leads to still less muscle.
Nutritional shortfall. Older dogs may eat less due to dental pain, nausea, or reduced appetite. If protein intake falls below what the body needs to maintain muscle, the deficit shows up as progressive wasting. Impaired digestive absorption compounds the problem—even dogs eating an adequate diet may not be extracting enough nutrients.
Pain and chronic disease. Arthritis, spinal problems, and other sources of chronic pain discourage movement. Chronic inflammatory conditions and organ diseases (kidney disease, liver disease, Cushing's) can also accelerate muscle catabolism independently of activity level.
Early recognition gives you the best chance to intervene. Because sarcopenia develops gradually, side-by-side photo comparisons months apart can be more revealing than day-to-day observation.
Visual assessment. Stand above your dog and look at its silhouette. Pay particular attention to:
Palpation. Run your hands over the thighs, hips, shoulders, and along the spine. Healthy muscle feels firm and springy. Atrophied muscle feels soft and thin, with bone easily felt beneath.
Do this check monthly and note what you find. Documenting changes gives your veterinarian useful trend data.
A dog can maintain a stable body weight while quietly losing muscle and gaining fat—a condition sometimes called sarcopenic obesity. Conversely, a dog may lose weight from fat while its muscle mass remains adequate.
