Myofascial pain responds well to targeted physical treatment. Most approaches are non-invasive and well-tolerated by senior dogs.
Manual trigger-point release. A trained practitioner locates each trigger point and applies sustained, moderate pressure for 30 seconds to two minutes until the taut band softens. The dog may show mild discomfort during compression, followed by visible relaxation as the point releases.
Therapeutic massage. Broader massage techniques improve blood flow, reduce fascial adhesions, and address compensatory tension patterns across entire muscle chains — not just individual trigger points.
Hydrotherapy. Warm-water swimming or underwater treadmill work is especially valuable for senior dogs. Water buoyancy reduces joint stress while resistance gently strengthens muscles. The warmth helps relax fascia.
Therapeutic exercise. Controlled exercises — cavaletti walking, balance-board work, slow incline walking — rebuild strength in weakened muscles and correct compensatory movement patterns that created trigger points in the first place.
Adjunctive modalities. Low-level laser therapy (photobiomodulation) and therapeutic ultrasound can reduce pain and promote tissue healing in deeper fascial layers. Warm compresses applied at home for 10–15 minutes before gentle movement can also help between professional sessions.
