As dogs enter their senior years, their eyes undergo gradual changes—some entirely normal, others signaling disease that benefits from early treatment. Understanding which senior dog eye problems are expected and which require prompt care helps you monitor your dog's eye health at home and recognize when a veterinary exam is needed. Redness, pain, sudden cloudiness, discharge, or new navigation difficulty warrants professional evaluation.
Cornea. The cornea may gradually lose some transparency. Lipid deposits can form a white or gray arc at the outer edge—a condition called corneal arcus or arcus senilis. This is common in older dogs and usually does not significantly impair vision.
Iris. The iris can thin and atrophy with age, sometimes developing visible gaps or irregular edges. This iris atrophy allows more light to enter the eye, potentially causing increased sensitivity to bright light. The pupil may respond more slowly or incompletely to changes in lighting.
Lens. Lens changes are the most common and noticeable. Nuclear sclerosis—a natural hardening and compression of the lens core—gives the lens a characteristic bluish-gray haze. This is not a cataract and usually does not threaten vision. True cataracts, by contrast, are opaque and can progressively block light from reaching the retina.
Vitreous. The gel-like vitreous humor may liquefy and develop floating opacities. Small, stable floaters are generally harmless, but sudden changes in the vitreous can occasionally indicate retinal problems.
Retina. Retinal cells can gradually degenerate, reducing sensitivity—especially in dim light. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a genetic condition, but age-related retinal thinning can also occur independently. Dogs retain excellent low-light vision longer than humans thanks to the tapetum lucidum, but this advantage diminishes as the retina and surrounding structures age.
Most age-related eye changes develop slowly over months to years, giving both the dog and the owner time to adapt. Recognizing what is expected helps you avoid unnecessary anxiety while staying alert to genuine warning signs.

Yes. These are simple, non-invasive tests that provide essential diagnostic information.
